“You Angel You” – Bob Dylan (Performed by the Manfred Mann Earth Band) – BANJO & MANDOLIN – NEW! – 2019

I’m a fan of Bob Dylan’s music, especially the folk-sounding stuff. There are bands out there such as Manfred Mann’s Earth Band that have taken certain Dylan songs and, in my opinion, turned out a better, happier-sounding recording than old Bob. I’m not knocking Bob, just noticing what other talented folks have been able to do with his immense song-writing skills. This arrangement is introduced with a BANJO INTRO and the Banjo then backs up and plays fill-in licks here and there for the rest of the tune. The mandolin is featured in the Vocal & Rhythm tracks. There are a few mandolin fill-in licks, but a fairly decent straight out MANDOLIN SOLO at the end… This arrangement prints 17 pages, so please check your paper and ink/toner supply BEFORE committing to print this monster out! “He Stopped Loving Her Today” – George Jones – BANJO – UPDATED – 2019

I took a banjo arrangement I’d done back in 2010 and updated the banjo back-up (roll patterns and licks used to support the melody), totally re-did the bass according to my recent work, replaced the keyboard back-up with fiddle back-up and lastly, replaced the rhythm banjo with rhythm mandolin… The percussion track has also been re-done. I also posted this arrangement to the Mando Hangout where I’ve been posting much of my recent mandolin and mando-banjo work. Tom

“Animals in Heaven?” – (Joke)…

A farmer came in from the field and was having lunch with his family.

His little girl loved all the animals on the farm.

They had cows and horses, pigs, chickens and the like.

The daughter asked, “Daddy… are there horses in Heaven?”…

“Yes, my dear, there ARE horses in Heaven… and other animals as well”, replied her father.

“How can we be sure, daddy?”, the girl asked…

“Well… “, says the father, “We KNOW there are cats in Heaven!”…

“Cats, daddy?”, responds the daughter…

“Yes cats! Where do you think they get the strings for the harps?”

“I Know You Rider” – Grateful Dead – NEW! – BANJO & MANDOLIN – 2019

I took an arrangement I’d done years ago for banjo and added a mandolin part to it. In the process, I also ‘heated up’ the banjo solo in a couple of places with a 2-measure Hot-Rod Pentatonic Lick that was not in the original solo. I love this tune. One of my former guitar students from Music Folk in St. Louis, Matthew Engliss, introduced me to this cool tune back in the 1990s. Thanks, Matt! 12/19/2019

“Intermittent, Syncopated Pinching” – NEW! – 2019

I’ve been hearing a ‘lick’ in my head that was centered around some very rhythmic, pinched 2-stop chords. I don’t know why this never occurred to me before, but it kept coming back, coming back… Every time I’m driving or trying to sleep, it would come back yet again… Tonight, I figured it out and how it should look/sound in tablature, so here is a tune I made up based on the form of Dueling Banjos (the jam part) and also Bugle Call Rag… Without further adieu, “Lonesome Pony” – Tom
